Hello Jan,
I am responding with bits of information, not in any particular order, about Jacob Goebel and Mary, nee Niersbach, his wife.
You may wish to contact their grandson Thomas A. Goebel, who was born in Racine, WI, at 7106 Beckwith Rd., Morton Grove, IL 60053. His wife, Ruth, advised that contact would be O.K.
I have in front of me a copy of the 1900 Census for Racine, E D 35, Sheet 16, obtained through HeritageQuest Online. The family of Jacob and Mary is shown as well as that of their son-in-law, Peter, and their daughter, Anne, his wife. Additional children listed are: Gertrude,Barbara, Lizzie, Jacob and Mary. Lastly, is listed the mother-in-law, Catherine, who was born in October, 1820. You have referred to Catherine's last name as 'Wasch'. Whoever transcribed her name from the original recorded it as "MASON". When I enetered Catherine Mason on HeritageQuest, for 1900 Racine Census, it brought me back to the Jacob Goebel family.
The name of the son-in-law seems to begin with Pfeil. That name is very common in Wisconsin when I checked into it. The letters after that are confusing.
Previously, I found the immigration of the family in Vol. 47, page 378 of "Germans to America", under the name GABEL. Listed there are Jacob (37), Marie (31), Anna (6), Gertrude (2) and Barbara 6/12. They arrived in NYC on 18 October 1883 aboard the ship "Waesland". They gave the country of origin as Swiss, not Germany.
The problem with Catherine is that her last name was spelled NEIRSBACH,age 67 when coming to America.
On FamilySearch, LDS site, film # 0584943, I believe that the parents of Jacob Goebel b. 11 February 1846 were Jacob and Maria Magdalena Goebel, nee, Bremm, Catholic, in Ernst, Rheinland, Prussia.
I need to search further for proof of the parents of Mary Niersbach, although I think that Catherine on the 1900 Racine Census is her mother, having been listed as 'mother-in-law. It remains to be seen.
If and when I find anything useful,I will pass it along.
Good luck with your search.
Regards,
Bob Niersbach
