Mattie was reportedly adopted and her original name was supposedly Thompkins. She appears in the 1870 census with John Gibson (listed as daughter) and his wife Mary (probably Harnesberger of Lincoln County, since John and Mary Gibson are living with the Adam Harnesberger family in the 1860 census), then in 1880 census she is listed as John Gibson's "adopted daughter", and Mary is no longer listed with the Gibson family. John Gibson had gone to warin 1861, but came home in November 1862. He could have been the father of Mattie, but why would he list her as "adopted daughter" after his wife is gone? Mattie married Ben Hill Jackson in 1882.
