“TROUP COUNTY ITEMS…

“A sad accident occurred at the West Point mills on Friday night. A little son of Mr. NEWSOME, the foreman of the spinning department, got into a boat by himself, rowed into the river and was drowned. His body was found the next morning, lodged under an overhanging rock. He was about ten years old.”

[Columbus (GA) Enquirer newspaper, Saturday, 23 JUL 1881]

According to family Bible records, my gg-grandparents Henry M. & Permelia A. (PAGE) NEWSOME had a son Robert Marion NEWSOME (04 OCT 1873 – 15 JUL 1881). I am wondering if the above could be he. Henry moved with his family to Clapp’s Factory in northern Muscogee County when he was a boy (early 1840s). He was still there in 1870, but had moved his family to Trion Village in Chattooga County by 1875. In 1880, they were back in the Columbus area, residing in Brownville, Lee County, AL (Brownville became Phenix City). In March of 1884, Henry and Permelia’s eldest child married in Carroll County, Georgia – the family lived at Banning and worked at the mill there.

I am wondering if they could have lived at West Point in 1881? Is there a local newspaper there that might have run a notice about this death that included the name or initials of the father? Is a city directory from 1881 available? I also came across these:

“PERSONAL

“Mr. Jas. NEWSOME left yesterday to visit friends at West Point, Ga.”

[Columbus (GA) Enquirer-Sun newspaper, 10 JUL 1892.]

“News Items of Interest from Phenix City and Girard.

“Mr. James NEWSOME, of West Point, is visiting friends in Phenix City. He is an old Phenix City boy, and has many friends here.”

[Columbus (GA) Enquirer-Sun newspaper, September 20, 1896, p. 6.]

Henry (1836-1899) had a brother named James (b. ca. 1834) , but I don’t know if this is the same man or not. This name often appears as NEWSOM. Any assistance appreciated. John in TX
