Does anyone know why someone would be listed on the 1850 census as living in the 55th (? I think) Militia District, Troup, GA? What did that mean? That was about 11 years before the Civil War, so why did they have a militia there? (I think my gg-grandfather is listed there, and he lived in Fulton County, I believe, so I wondered if he was in the military and what, exactly, that meant.)
