The Towns County Historical Society has been formed and membership is open for anyone who is interested in the genealogy and history of the Towns County area. One of the first projects to be undertaken is to be an updated version of the wonderful Jerry Taylor book "Hearthstones from Home." You will not want to miss an opportunity to be in on this.

For the research-minded, the county has given them all the tax records - huge books - from the early 1900's - 1980, and one book from 1893. Tax books might not seem to be very interesting, but they are, because they give you an opportunity to verify that your relatives lived in certain places from year to year. Then beginning with the 1906 tax book, Confederate veterans and widows of Confederate veterans are listed on a special census in the front of each book.

Membership catagories are as follows:
Students = $5 per year
Individual = $15 per year
Family = $20 per year
Sustaining = $60 per year
Corporate = $100 per year
Life = $250 (paid once only)
