I'm actually sitting here right now with another family member looking up the same info... she mentioned your name again as a go-to person.

You mentioned the the thread above that Mary Wells was listed in 1880 as a servant to Joseph Ailand. Would this perhaps be Joseph Adams? We can't find a Joseph Ailand at all in NC or GA. But we do have a Mary Wells, about the right age, listed as as servant to the Joseph Adams family of Cherokee, NC.

We're still trying to figure all this out.

Was Mary perhaps a woman of ill-repute who never married? Thought she's listed as widowed, maybe she lied?
Why isn't a husband listed for her at all?

It's very hard to try to figure all this out. We appreciate any help you are able to give...
