I gave them personally to the head of the library-Claudia Copelan. She called me yesterday, and said basically the same thing- except that she was sorry all this happened-in retrospect. (Or probably more that it CAME TO LIGHT and got back to me!) A 3rd cousins wife was a volunteer-saw the pictures and material she was working on-ask to BORROW them-them ask if she could have them. She is the one who decided who they should be distributed to. (Not a relative, but a 3nd wife of Billy Spier in Dawson) I told the lady yesterday-that as far as I was concerned-her actions could not be "taken back" and what was there for generations to come-on local Terrell Co. folks-now deceased- was carelessly given away. My letter from the Regional Directory who is also housed in Dawson- at that library- Frances P Messer- Jun. 22, 2006 states basically what she said on the phone.. "In reference to our telephone conversation yesterday, I have spoken with Claudia Copeland, Terrell County Librarian concerning the genealogy material that you donated to the library. She will be most happy to discuss this subject with you and will telephone you in the near futher. According to our local gift policy, once materials are donated and accepted by the library, the gift becomes th property of the library. If you would like to change this policy, you may want to notify J. Frank Drapalic, Chair of the Terrell County Board of Trustees of your concerns. All the libraries in the Kinchafoonee Regional Library System strive very hard to fulfill our mission to preserve material for future generation of researchers. We appreciate all donations, especially family histories. (And in my estimation-they have a sorry way of showing it.) Mrs. Copeland was VERY HAPPY that I had decided not to go above the heards of these two-and contact the name I had there. I felt changing the local policy was the place to start, and wrote Mr. Drapalic, and told him exactly how I felt-and what would NOT be done with the rest of my material, including many books, other material, and the money I had thought to give them to display this properly in a larger, more adequate room...after my death. Mrs. Copeland said I probably would have been sent back to the local level-anyhow. (I still reserve the other-if no action is taken at the lower) Ms. Gerry Hill-Native of Terrell Notify Administrator about this message?
