The records are less than conclusive, to say the least, and there is an issue of whether Upchurch might not have been the true maiden surname of Rebecca, according to some observations of a colleague in Salt Lake City. The IGI shows a marriage on 3 June 1788 in Hancock County, Georgia between Nancy Abercrombie and William Barnes, but no other detail. This might be the same or a different William Barnes, or, this could have been an earlier marriage of William Barnes and a check should be made to determine when Nancy Abercrombie died; if she predeceased the 1793 marriage to Rebecca, then it might fit.
The IGI also shows a William Barnes who married Rebecca Munford on Feb. 5, 1793 in Halifax, Virginia. This fits time-wise and Virginia is where the children stated that William was born. And their first known child was born about 1796, so that fits as well.
The IGI also shows Charles Barnes, born about 1714 in Augusta, Virginia, married about 1739 to Elizabeth McDowell who was also born in Augusta about 1718 and their child is listed as Sarah McDowell Barnes who was born about 1740 in Augusta, Ga. Charles Barnes and Elizabeth McDowell also had a child named Rebeccah Barnes born about 1759 in Frederick, Va. This raises the possibility that Rebeccah Barnes was a relative of William Barnes whom he married after his first wife was deceased. This would result in some of the children of William being the child of Elizabeth McDowell.
Whatever documentation you might care to share that will resolve these issues with regard to these progenitors, will be sincerely appreciated. R. Russell
