George G. Matthews, born 1 June 1851 in Georgia is George Grandbury Matthews, probable son of Edmond Matthews and Lurany (Weaver) Matthews who were married in Sumter county, GA 7 April 1850.
Edmond and Lurany are found on the Sumter County, GA 1850 census as age 22 and 17, farmer with 500 value of real estate. By 1860 they have 2 children, George W. age 10 and William W. Matthews age 4.
Edmond and Lewraney/Lurany then have daughters Frances, Cassia E. Edney D. in GA about 1862/64/68, before moving to Old Town, Conecuh County, Alabama. (where they are found in the 1870 census).
It is probable that Edmond is the son of Joseph and Nancy (?) Matthews, so far found in 1840/1850 Sumter County, GA census, along with siblings: Matilta, Amos, Joseph, Asenath(sp), Phoeiba(sp), Nancy, Mary, Sarah, William, James .
Amos Matthews born abt. 1831 married a Sarah and also moved to Old Town, Conecuh County, Alabama with children Emma and Virgina.
Three of the brothers, Edmond, Amos, & Joseph were said to be in Co. G. 2nd Georgia Cavalry.
Anyone working on this line of Matthews? Did Joseph and Nancy stay and die in Sumter County, or did they move to Alabama as well?
In 1850 Joseph and Edmond had farms near each other. Is there a Platt map of Sumter County for 1850? They lived near Quebec, GA. Also looking for published cemetery records. Joseph(Sr) said to be born in Georgia, calculated about 1800. Thanks Juanita(Matthews)Niswonger
