Were the Haygoods Cherokee Indians?

Seeking information on the Haygood Family of the Toccoa area. In particular, I'm looking to confirm a long-held family story that the Haygoods were Cherokees. The 1870 Census for Habersham County, Ga., Toccoah District, has an Emily (nicknamed Ember) Haygood, 49, female, white, ieeps house, $0 real estate, 200 in presonal property, born in Ga., can't read or write. Also in the household is an Asa G. Haygood, 17, male; Elizabeth Haygood, 15, female; and a Sarah J. Haygood. Next door is an Elizabeth Haygood, aged 75.

Sarah is my great grandmother. By 1880, and probably before 1878, she married a railroad conductor names James Cannon Stephens. She is living with him in the 1880 census for Toccoa.

Sarah died in Toccoa around 1908. James moved to South Carolina, remarried, and died around 1911. Any help would be appreciated.
