EASTERN CHEROKEE I have found out more about our SMITH family of Griffin, Spalding, GA. Our SMITHs lived in the area before Griffin was established in fact and maybe when it was still Creek Indian Territory. I believe it was called Pleasant Grove and/or Pomona at first. Our SMITH family is Cherokee and originates in Hiwassee (TN). Not all Cherokee went out on the Trail of Tears, nor were they all citizens of the Cherokee Nation (est. ca 1820 - 1898), this does not make them any less of who they are as people, however. Susannah Charity REESE (1776/1782 TN - 1832 GA) m. David OOWATIE (1773 - 1842) Hiwassee (TN) they were the parents of: Sarah Susan WATIE (ca 1800 GA - ?) m. Joseph SMITH Sr. (1798 - ) Sarah Susan WATIE is listed on the 1860 Spalding GA census in the Africa District as Sarah SMITH, age 60, occupation farming so perhaps Joseph Sr. had died by then. They were the parents of: 1. Henry SMITH I, the father of Chief Nimrod Jarrett SMITH aka Tsaladileh b. 1837 d. 1893 CNE 2. Mary Ann SMITH b. 1819 * 3. William SMITH b. 1824 * 4. Eli SMITH b. 1829 * 5. Joseph SMITH Jr. b. 1830 or 1840? * [Spalding GA 1860 Census] 6. John W. SMITH b. 1834 * 7. Susan Angeline SMITH b. 1839 * 8. Andrew James SMITH b. ca 1840 * [as James, Farmhand 1860 Spalding GA Census] 9. Ross B. SMITH, the father of John S. SMITH * 10. Sarah L. SMITH b. 1841 [Spalding GA Census] 11. Elizabeth F. SMITH b. 1845 [Spalding GA 1860 Census] Four of the children of Sarah (Susan) WATIE and Joseph SMITH Sr. (as above) are listed on the Spalding GA 1860 Census, Africa District, Joseph Jr., (Andrew) James, Sarah L., and Elizabeth F. SMITH. Elizabeth F. SMITH, b. 1845 (GA) m. Henry Abram (H.A.) BROOKS b. ca 1840 (GA) The SMITHs and the BROOKs were next-door neighbours. An 1888 map shows "H. A. BROOKS, Freehold #104" in the Africa District. http://www.rootsweb.com/~gaspald3/images/cmf0583.JPG Elizabeth F. SMITH and Henry Abram BROOKS were the parents of: 1. W. H. BROOKS b. 1864 2. Emily Ophelia BROOKS b. 1869 3. Alice BROOKS b. 1870 4. Ada Y. BROOKS b. 1873 5. Ida I. BROOKS b. 1873 6. Isaac E. BROOKS b. 1874 7. C. C. BROOKS b. 1879 Emily Ophelia BROOKS m. Emmett J. KILGORE (1860-1934 GA), they were my maternal great-grandparents. I believe our branch of the family left Griffin sometime during or after the Great Depression (1930s), most of them ended up in Atlanta, Fulton GA, at one time or another.
