McBride Methodist Church Cemetery Listing by Maynard Poythress & Fred Upchurch.
Posted by: Dale E. Reddick (ID *****9440) Date: October 28, 2004 at 11:48:34
  of 671

Hi Folks,

The following is my extraction of the text from an MS Word file sent to me by Maynard Poythress.

I've modified things -very- slightly when copying the Word document created by Maynard. A picture of the church was removed and some of the title lines have been reformatted and / or moved because of the removal of that picture. Otherwise, the information presented here should be the same as what was in the file sent to me by Maynard.

And like Maynard, I have many relatives interred at McBride. My uncle, my paternal grandparents, one of my g-grandmothers, one of my gg-grandmothers, and other relatives are buried there. Folks interred there with the Reddick, Flythe, Sheley, and McClellan surnames are related to me, as are others.

I would just like to say that I appreciate Maynard's and Fred's efforts on behalf of all of those who have relatives buried within the cemetery at McBride Methodist Church.

Maynard's e-mail is provided at the end of this message. I would suggest that any of you wanting a copy of Maynard's original MS Word file contact him to have him e-mail it to you.

Sincerely,

Dale E. Reddick

Dale, I have finally finished this thing and a copy is attached for your database. I hope it will prove helpful. Your crowd seems to be the predominant name in the group. I tried to keep it as free of anything but pure data as seemed appropriate. I’ve sent it to both the Screven page and the Georgia page but neither has seen fit to post it for what I’m sure are good and sufficient reasons of their own….which is why I felt you might want a copy.

Best,

Maynard

McBride Methodist Church
Screven County, Georgia

A revised listing of inscribed monuments - August, 2003.

Update to 2003

The modest objective of this listing is to simply update the most recent list of tombstone inscriptions done in 1957 by the ladies of the Briar Creek Chapter of the D. A. R. The list is alphabetical and, as in the original, no attempt is made to include genealogical notations.

In addition to new burials, since 1957 several memorial stones have been added to graves that existed prior to 1957. This list includes the newly added stones plus the new graves since 1957 and otherwise is only intended to duplicate the list compiled by the ladies of the D. A. R.

McBride’s cemetery is a 300’ x 240’ rectangle directly behind the church itself. It is enclosed by a tasteful, low chain link fence. The rectangle’s long dimension runs east to west. The cemetery is exceptionally well maintained.

The original intended layout was for alphabetical family plots to run in north to south rows with the rows progressing west to east. The lettered stone marker blocks for this purpose remain. However, over the years this plan varied as family members with different surnames were interred in family plots. Also, the allotted space in some cases proved too small and new sites were thus located elsewhere within the grounds.

For the above reason and given the small size of the cemetery, a locating schematic diagram is somewhat impractical and likely unnecessary. In locating a particular grave, generally the older the gravestone the closer it will be located by following the original plan. In any case, however, locating a particular monument and grave is only a matter of a few minutes.

McBride Methodist Church is located on GA 24 (the Newington Highway) 4.3 miles east of U. S. Highway 301.
