Tonya,
This is a pretty nice town; large enough for good variety, small enough not to get too badly lost in. :) And the history here is extensive, impressive and fun to search through!
I hope you do visit. I should have thought of this earlier perhaps but ... the Augusta Genealogical Society (I am *not* a member) is holding its 22nd Annual Homecoming/Seminar this weekend, Aug. 17-19. Among the activities/seminars are: courthouse trips for hands-on research at nearby counties of barnwell, Edgefield, our own Richmond, and others as needed; one hour walking tour of Magnolia Cemetery (or slide lecture in the event of rain); computer demonstrations of genealogical CD-ROMs from the library's collection; "Born in Virginia -- How Do I Find Him?"; "Ga Laws on Cemetery Preservation; Resources Available from the State"; "Ethnicity, Geography and Inherited Disorders: Interconnectoin Clues for Tracking Immigrant Ancestors"; "Documentation and Preservation of Historic Cemeteries"; and several other seminars, a total of 17.
Registration fees including Saturday lunch is $35 for registration by Aug. 15, $40 per person after Aug. 15. Optional dinners for Friday ($18 inc. tax & tip) and Saturday BBQ ($10 inc. tax & tip)
The Augusta Genealogical Society Library HQ is at 1109 Broad St. Library #: (706) 72-4073, Info # (706) 738-2241.
