Henry Johnson and Son Walter E. Johns(t)on

Hello List,

Does anyone know anything about a Henry Johnson, born circa 1808, in Georgia? He was listed in the 1860 Richmond County census, with his first wife, Mary B., and six children; in the 1870 Richmond County census, with his second wife Mylanta (Lantie), and a son James from his first marriage; and in the 1880 census for Hephzibah, Richmond County, with his second wife Lantie, and five "new" children, including a Walter E. Johnson, born in 1874.

As background, I have looked for my grandfather and his parents for twenty-five years, without any success. He was, I thought, Walter E. Johnston, born 31 October 1874, who lived in Richmond County in 1900. But, he was listed in the 1900 census for Augusta as Walter Johnson (without a T), living in Harry Williams' household, his father-in-law.

I'm beginning to think he might be the Walter E. Johnson listed in the 1880 census for Hephzibah, son of Henry and Mylanta. He did marry a girl from a Richmond County family (Mary Elizabeth Williams).

And, my late mother always thought her father-in-law was one of eight or more siblings. She also believed he had "borrowed" the middle name he used, Ewing, from a prominent Richmond County family. He was generally known as Walter Ewing Johnston. But, I have never been able to tie him into that prominent, well documnted Richmond County family.

Perhaps he borrowed both their middle and last names!

My grandfather was listed in the census in Atlanta as Walter E. Johnston in 1910, 1920 and 1930. His death certificate is given as Walter Ewing Johnston, and my father was a Walter E. Johnston (at least I thought so), but one never knows!

Any leads greatly appreciated!

Robert Edge Johnston
