Much to my surprise, I found Mary L. Smith listed in the 1900 Census, State of Georgia, Richmond County, Augusta 4th Ward. Series: T623 Roll: 219 Page: 149B 1423 Broad Street House No. 173, Family No. 211 Smith, Mary L. Head W F May 1832 68 Wd -- -- --VA NC NC ~ Isabel Dau W F Apr 1846 54 S -- -- -- WI NY VATeacher-dancing Martin, Adeline Dau W F Apr 1851 49 Wd -- 3 1 IL NY VA Teacher - music Isabel and Adeline were not the daughters of Mary L. Smith as shown in this census. They were step daughters. Mary L. was the 2nd wife of Hiram Smith and I suppose she considered Isabel and Adeline her daughters. I also suppose the census taker assumed that since Mary L. said Isabel and Adeline were her daughters he filled in "Virginia" under the Place of Birth of Mother for both women. Their real mother was Elizabeth Jane Boyd, born about 1819 in New York and died October 25, 1866 in Cincinnati. Mary L. Martin married Hiram Smith July 14, 1868 in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio. They were listed there in the 1870 Census in Cincinnati. Hiram was 59 years old at the time. He was born March 22, 1811 in Woodhull, Steuben County, New York. He was a physician and a Demonstrator of Anatomy at the Cincinnati College of Medicine & Surgery. I have not been able to locate Hiram since 1870. I do not know when he died and I was very much surprised when I found his wife and 2 of his daughters in Augusta in 1900 so perhaps Hiram came to Augusta to work at the medical college. I do know that his 3rd daughter and her family were in Augusta in 1876, because one of their children was born there then. Would anyone be willing to look for a death record or an obituary for Hiram Smith from 1870 - 1900 and for Mary L. Smith after 1900 in Georgia? I would really appreciate some help. Thanks.
