Thanks so much for the great information! I did follow up and checked all the early newspapers at the link you provided, using several forms of the name.

I did find two instances that are likely, but they are probably his son, Thomas Keeling Smith. Sigh. Not only am I working on "Smiths" but every generation seems to use the same names!

Apparently, Thomas Keeling Smith (Sr) was a very quiet man since I can find no record of him, including an obituary. I think he was buried on private property, next to his wife, so that doesn't help either.

Sometimes I enjoy reading those old newspapers so much that I almost forget why I am there!
