I was at the National Archieves in Washington D. C. in July. I was searching for information on William J. Stevens, married to Isabelle Roundtree. There had been some speculation in the family that William had served in the Revolution.
I found pension records for a William Stephens of Putnam County GA. This is not the William I was seeking information on. In 1818 this William Stephens was 68 years old.
The William J. Stevens I was seeking died in 1833 in Putnam County leaving a large estate, but no will. I have found his estate papers and there is no link that I know of between these two men.
I would be happy to send the records I copied to anyone looking for information on this gentleman. Apparently he had very little income, no land holdings. His wife was about 60 years old. There is a mention of a Corbett Stephens in the paper work. This Mr. Stephens was very highly thought of as the letters from people trying to help him get his pension attest. I only ask for postage and the amount it cost me to copy each page.
