(Posted on Ancestry Pike and Upson boards, GenForum Pike and Upson Boards.) I'm looking for proof that Hardy T. Mathis / Matthews was the son of John Thomas Mathis / Matthews and Sara Kersey. This is the family, from the LDS AF: John Thomas Mathis, b. 25 Apr 1849, Upson County, Georgia. Married Sara Edna Kersey, B. 7 Jun 1855, Upson County, Georgia Children: Luvina Mathis, b. 2 Mar 1871, Upson County, Georgia Carrie I. Mathis, b. 14 Nov 1872, Upson County, Georgia Hardy T Matthews, b. 8 Nov 1876, Upson County, Georgia Martha J. (Mattie) Mathis, b. 10 Jun 1879, Pike County, Georgia James W. Mathis, b. 20 May 1883, Pike County, Georgia Minnie Lee Mathis, b. 19 Aug 1890, Pike County, Georgia (FGS down below) Hardy is only with his family for one census, the 1880. He married Alice Malinda Adams in 1898. The family started spelling "Mathis" as "Matthews" sometime between 1860 and 1900. I have tried these searches in the LDS 1880 with no luck: ========================================= (Name, birth year, county. I always limit it to Georgia, use +/- 5 in the birth year and make sure "Exact spelling" is NOT clicked. The LDS wizards make sure "Mathis" comes up along with "Matthews", "Mathews" and "Maddox".) John Mathis, 1849, All Thomas, Mathis, 1849, All J T Mathis, 1849, All T J Mathis, 1849, All (blank) Mathis, 1849, Pike & Upson John (blank), 1849, Pike & Upson Sara Mathis, 1855, all Edna Mathis, 1855, all S Mathis, 1855, all E Mathis, 1855, all Sara (blank), 1855, with HoH John, Pike & Upson Sara (blank), 1855, with HoH Thomas, Pike & Upson Sara (blank), 1855, with HoH L J, Pike & Upson Sara (blank), 1855, with HoH Lewis, Pike & Upson Sara (blank), 1855, with HoH Jackson, Pike & Upson (These last two in case they were living with Lewis Jackson Mathis, Hardy's father.) Luvina (blank), 1871, Pike & Upson Carrie (blank), 1872, Pike & Upson Hardy (blank), (blank) Pike & Upson H (blank), 1876, Pike & Upson T (blank), 1876, Pike & Upson Mattie (blank), 1878, Pike & Upson M (blank), 1878, Pike & Upson Find Lewis J. Mathis in Red Bone, Upson, Ga. (JT's father), click on "household view", click "Next household" 100 times. Repeat with "previous household". ====================================================== Given the birth dates of the Martha (1879) and James (1883) in Pike County, he's probably there under some sort of odd spelling, but I can't find him. I checked Upson, too, in case the AF was wrong on the birth county. Has anyone found John and Sara on the 1880? Does anyone happen to have something else that proves Hardy's parents?
