Clonts in Paulding and Douglas Counties, Georgia, 1850-1900

Jacob Clonts, 27 Sept. 1790-1 Aug. 1881, is buried at Bethel Methodist Church, Brownsville, Paulding County, Georgia, with wife Elizabeth Shelby, 22 June 1797-10 Sept. 1872. Jacob is said to be the son of Revolutionary veteran Jeremiah Clonts of Mecklenburg County, North Carolina.

Jacobís children were:
1. John Green Clonts, 1815-1890, buried at Bethel Church with wife Luceriah Varner, 1822-1894. Their children included Frances who m. Rice E. Kiker; Sarah E. m. Mason J. Florence,;Mary E. m. Thomas L. Varner; Thomas Jefferson, 1861-1933, a wagon maker in Douglasville in the 1890s, m. Elizabeth Odessa Furr (all buried Bethel Church), daughter of Harrison Furr of Douglasville; and Luceriah Clonts, b. 1866, m. John Thomas Duncan, b. 1858, co-founder of N.B. & J.T. Duncan store in Douglasville. John T. Duncan served as state representative and state senator from Douglas County before World War I.
2. Elizabeth Clonts, 1831-1915, buried at Bethel Church with husband James Motley Watson, 1825-1899. Their children included Permelia Watson, b. 1872, married Judge A. LaFayette Bartlett, 1851-1926, of Paulding County; James Brown Watson, 1862-1944, noted hymn writer; Martha Watson, 1853-1935, m. George W. Hill, 1847-1933; Emma Allene Watson, b. 1860, m. John Hiram McLarty, ordinary of Douglas County and mayor of Douglasville; others.
3. Absolum Brown Clonts, 1834-1918, unmarried, buried at Bethel Church.
4. Thomas Hervey Clonts, 1829-July 1863, m. Sarah A. Varner and died after his capture at Vicksburg in the War Between the States. Children included Asberry B., 1851-1935, buried Flint Hill Church, Hiram, Paulding County; Lucy m. Joel P. Bagby; William T., 1860-1902, m. Martha D. McLarty, buried Bethel Church.
5. Mary E. Clonts, 1836-1910, m. William J. Tidwell, 1838-1864, buried at Bethel Church. She married 2nd to Hugh C. Taylor, 1842-1869, buried at Bethel Church, 3rd to William Butler.
6. Jacob Shelby Clonts, 1820-1861, died in the War. He and wife Mary, 1824-1897, buried at Bethel Church, were the parents of Jacob Pierce Clonts, b. 1855, who lived in Douglasville on the 1880 census, and David Asbury Clonts, 1858-1895, buried at Sweetwater Baptist Church, Paulding County. D.A. Clonts married 1881 V.E. Jones.
7. Jeremiah Wesley Clonts, born 1821, died in July 1863 at Vicksburg after his capture in the War. He married Mary Ellen Polk, daughter of Ezekiel Polk. Their son Charles Wilson Clonts, 1854-1917, m. 1st 1876 Frances King, 2nd 1905 Mary Ella Johnston. Jeremiah Wesley Clonts m. 2nd, 1859, Mary Green, 1836-1919, buried at Mt. Nebo Church, Paulding County. Mary Green Clonts married in 1866 to Leroy Rakestraw. Children of Jeremiah Wesley Clonts and Mary Green included John Quillian Clonts, 1859-1937, buried at Bethel Church with wife Florence Duncan; and Jacob M. Clonts, 1861-1895, buried at Bethel Church with wife Georgia.

Ritch.)
