My Richard Dowdy is mentioned in his fathers James Dowdy's will of Cumberland Co Va. 1804, Will Bk. III, pg 255. He mentions his other children as well and names his wife Frances(Martain/Martin).
Richard Dowdy m. Martha Fowler daughter of Alexander Fowler and Margaret(Peggie)unk last name.
They lived in Oglethorpe, Co. Ga. They were the parents of Martin Dowdy of Oglethorpe Co. GA.
In the Will of John Martin Cumberland Co. Va. Will Bk. II, January 1777, He names Martin Dowdy(His grandson) and Richard Dowdy(Son-in-Law).
A word of caution do not get This Richard Dowdy mixed up with the Richard Dowdy of Schreven Co. Ga. they are not the same.
Also I believe Martin Dowdy had a first name of John named after his grandfather John Martin and that he is the same John M. Martin who served as Revolutionary soldier. No definate proof, however, in the Christian Index Martin Dowdy is listed as 79 yrs. old d. 25 Sep 1845. He would have been born abt. 1776 and the war ended 1783 so he would have been 17 old enought to have served. He is also listed in the Georgia Soldiers of the Revolution by name under John Hood as a revolutionary soldier. I have no definate proof of his service, as Martin, however the evidence points to him as a John M. Dowdy.
John Martin's father was Henry Martin of Cumberland,Va.d. 1758 and his father was Henry Martain(Notice the spelling of last name)also of Goochland(Cumberland Co.)
Another note: there is a John Martin Dowdy mentioned in Martin Dowdy's will as a relative, I believe this is a nephew at any rate he d. 22 Oct 1853 age 49.
The Dowdy's were members of the Clouds Creek BHaptist Church Oglethorpe Co. Ga. constituted 11 Sep 1788.
