Glenda, you would be surprised at how i've found some names spelled. ours have been .....BAUGH/BAUGHN/BAUGHAN/BAUGHMAN/VAUGHN.......well you get the idea, the same thing has happened on my moms family with her CARDEN/CARDIN/CARDON.
i've been doing this now for over 6 yrs. and i was like you when i first started, i never thought to look at different spellings but these old records are something and i've found a lot of times that it's either in the whoever took the census or sometimes it's whoever is transcribing them , they are so hard to read, and there's a lot to be said for some people's handwriting.
