My Dearest Anne,
I walked from my house in Monroe, Ga to the Courthouse in Covington which took awhile. When I got there my journey was furthered hindered by the Deed Books which were on the 3rd floor. After going through a strip search from the Deputies who guard the building and the honorable Judges I climbed the three flights of stairs and finally found the books.

Here is what I found out. On Feb 6 1830 Joel Phillips sold 20 acres of Land Lot 356, 9th District of Newton County to John Cook for $40.00. The legal description said it started at the SW corner of said lot 356 thence North fifty seven rods thence South to the line of said lot then to the beginning point. All being 20 acres more or less. The witnesses were Gibs Summer Whitten and Peter Kimble a JP.

I ran his name forward in the deed index books to 1900 and there is no record in his name showing what he did with the rest of the land.

I checked the estate records in the Probate Court and there was only a reference in James Phillip's Will which said Joel was his son. James's will was probated in 1834 and is the only document in the estate file.

After all that work I walked back home figuring I deserved a beer, but my wife wouldn't get me one. She said I smelled sweaty and dirty like old books. So I took a bath like a good husband and drank a diet coke.
