Dear Ann,
I'm replying to your inquiry about Josiah Mongar.I'm in the process of locating the family of my g-g-g grandmother, Hannah Mongar Smith.I suspect she married her husband in Eastern Indiana - John Smith.Through following her in the census records she was very consistent in saying she was born in New Jersey.Just one problem - I've found no record of her or any other family - until now.
Today I was reviewing Indiana census data for 1850 and came across Josiah Mongar, aged 46, born in New Jersey. He is living in Randolph County, Winchester Twp and has a son named John, as well as another named Josiah. He is also living in the same area in 1840.I'm sure you've already seen this entry.Josiah is listed as being a Justice of the Peace and living with them is a 29y/0 named Ruth Coapstick, who may be Elizabeth's sister. She, like Elizabeth, is born in Ohio - of course, she could also be a household servant, friend, etc.
My family lore is that the Mongars were Quakers.Certainly, my Hannah Mongar and John Smith were.I'll eventually look in some of the Quaker records to see if anything is there.Meanwhile, I would appreciate anything you might have gleaned. You're certainly welcome to anything I might have, which isn't alot so far.Thanks.
Mat Smith
