Sandra, I really appreciate your help. Here is where things stood after another day of research and I am still uncertain about so much of this:
(My husband's ancester) - 1960 Census- Pool's Mill Ga.
SHE IS 6 YRS OLD NAME ELLA
PARENTS JOHN B. REED & HARRIETT REED.
She is interchanged in future Georgia records with Mary Elizabeth Reid, daughter of John B. Reid & Mary Chandler who was born in 1851 and died in 1905.
One of these ladies married Thomas Howell Whitaker and the other married Jabez Maurice
I have located grave markers for Thomas Howell Whitaker & Mary Elizabeth Whitaker in Hillview Cemetery in Troup Co. Georgia. The dates on her stone are 1851-1905.She would have been 9 years old on the 1860 census.
Assuming that our Mary Ella Reed (Reid) did not marry Mr. Whitaker but married Mr. Holder here is what I found:
J.M. Holder Marriage to Mary E. Reid 12/20/1870 in Haralson, Georgia
I learned his name is Jabez Maurice Holder.
1870 Census He is shown as Jubuss Holder living with his parents Green & Mary Holder, in Cleburne Alabama. He was single when the census was taken 6/17/1870. His birthplace is shown as Georgia.
1880 Census - J.M. Holder is the head of household in Ball Play, Etowah, Al. With his wife M.E. Holder There are 4 children in the home (birthplace- Georgia). M. Holder age 9
N.L. Holder age 7
F. Holder Age 5
L.E. Holder age 2
1900 Census Jay M. Holder (appx bd 1848) as on other census is the head of the household in Etowah, Alabama. He is WIDOWED. Birthplace Georgia.
4- children in the household: Lula 21 (I think she was the L.E on
the 1880 census) and the others were born after 1880 and before the mother died. Sarah E. - 18, John A. - 14, Nanie M. -1 yr old.
I located the burial place of Jay Holder and his wife Beth Reid Holder. They are buried at
Thomas Cemetery in Jacksonville, Calhoun Co. Alabama. Findagrave.com has a picture of his stone and it gives his DEATH DATE ONLY. It is 11/15/1911.
Beth Reid Holder's information is posted also in the Thomas Cemetery and it says Birth: Unknown, Death date 2/15/1888. FOR THOSE WHO USE THE OTHER MARY ELIZABETH REED'S INFO, SHE DID NOT DIE UNTIL 1905 AND THIS MAN WAS A WIDOW IN 1900.
I AM LOOKING INTO POSSIBLY TWO RE-MARRIAGES FOR HIM. I still have a mystery about where ELLA WAS IN JUNE OF 1870 WHEN THAT CENSUS WAS TAKEN. If by some chance she is the one who married Mr. Holder and he was single and living with his parents in June of 1870 where was she?
As far as the name ELLA I am suspecting that was a "short" for Elizabeth back in the 1800's. Someone will have to help me with that but I think I can remember being told that by a Census Transcriber.
I am so grateful for any help.
