Larry, since Nathaniel was in Wayne Co., NC in 1850, I looked at the 1840 census in that county. There were 3 Cottons listed:

Joseph (I think, hard to read)
Males: 2 under age 5, one 5-10, one 40-50
Females: 1 age 10-15, one age 30-40

John H.
Males: 1 age 0-5, one 10-15, one 15-20, one 30-40
Females: 1 age 0-5, one 5-10, one 20-30

Amajiah (again, hard to read)
Males: 2 age 5-10, one 20-30
Females: 2 under age 5, one 5-10, one 20-30
