John & Edith Emily (Taylor) Reed, Kentucky & Missouri
Jeane,
Thank you for the information about the Samuel Reed family. On the 1880 census record in DeKalb County, MO, of my great-grandfather, Alpheus Reed, his father's birthplace is listed as Maryland and his mother's birthplace as Georgia. I also have census records for the parents of Alpheus, John and Edith Reed from 1850 & 1860. In 1850 in Caldwell County, MO, John Reed's birthplace is listed as Virginia and Edith's is listed as Georgia. In 1860 in Daviess County, MO, both John & Edith's birthplaces are listed as Maryland. According to census records, my great-grandfather's two oldest brothers, John Reed, Jr. and William T. Reed were both born in Maryland. His other brothers and two sisters were born in Kentucky.
It appears from the census data that Samuel and John Reed probably were not related at all, or not very closely related. About the only research I have been able to do on the Reed Families in the last couple of years was to check some of the tax records for Scott County, Kentucky, from Kentucky Historical Society microfilm. I found both a Samuel and a John Reed listed in Scott County in 1823, 1825, 1826 & 1830, also John Reed in 1827. The tax records lead me to conclude that my gg-grandfather John Reed's family was most likely residing in Scott County, Kentucky, when Alpheus Reed was born on 12 March 1827.
