Thomas - Thank you for your response.You are correct, it was Macon County in 1860.
The 1860 census is correct, because Solomon shows up in a brother in an 1850 census.Needham is also a family name.

I also feel the 1870 census is correct. The 1880 with M.S. Winters, I did not make the connection that this was Mortimer, thanks!
The William Winters in the 1880 census, I'm not convinced there is a relationship.William J. Winters' son was William Oscar Winters (born 1867) and his son was William Clarence Winters (born 1897), my grandfather.
I am actually trying to go the other direction.The oldest census I have is the 1850 census above that has William J. listed as William I. Winters.It states Rhoda as his mother, but no father is listed.This is where I am stuck.I cannot find who his father was or any more information on his mother.I know they came from either England or Scotland at some point, but don't know if it was William J.'s father or further back.Any suggestions as to where I go from here to find information on William J. father or his mother Rhoda?
