I'm not related, but your thinking seems reasonable given the ages listed on the 1840 census.
If this William Williamson died in Laurens County between 1840-50, there may be an estate or probate record showing the inventory and settlement of his estate.That is, children would probably be named and it may help determine if this William Williamson is worth pursuing.
I imagine the Georgia Archives would have all of that on microfilm, or the Laurens County probate court may have it as well.
If you aren't local, you could probably hire a researcher to do a quick check of the probate index films at the Archives.Alternately, it looks like the Georgia Archives will do limited searches for a fee:
