Jacob and Patience Johns South Carolina "Ethnic Identity" 1790 S.C. Census
Jacob Johns born about 1750 in the old Charleston District is my 5th Grt Grandfather. His wife's named was Patience (b. ca. 1750). Jacob and Patience had eleven children and I am descended down through their son Jeremiah. I know that they lived in the Old Charleston District in the mid to late 1700's and later moved to the old Beaufort/Colleton District on the Salkehatchie River.
In the 1790 S.C. census, in the Charleston District, the only Johns listed are "Johns, 7 other free". I am pretty sure that this was my Johns family. This would have been Jacob, his wife Patience and 5 of their children still living in the household. My question is does anyone have any information on what their ethnic background was to be listed as "Other Free"? I know during this time in the Charleston District that free blacks and Native Americans lived in the same areas of the district. If anyone has any information on this and the Jacob Johns family in South Carolina, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank You
