Thanks, Sue. Sorry, I probably should've told you in my first posting, I know how my family got from Coward to Cowherd. My GG Grandfather William Coward was in the 1850 Cherokee Co., GA census. In the 1860 Pickens Co. census he and it looks like several other members of the local clan had switched to Cowart. For him it didn't stick very long because other early 1860 records show him as Coward. He moved to Logan Co., KY about 1864 and continued to use Coward. His father (I think), James, is in 1870 census as Cowart so it did stick for some of them. In KY, one of William's sons, my G Grandfather James Henry, switched to Cowherd during the late 1800's. The other children continued to use Coward and their families still do. There were Cowherd families from the VA line in that part of KY. One was a local schoolteacher. The story goes that Jim was influenced by their presence. Anyway, my Grandfather Henry Oliver Cowherd eventually established the new name although you can find him as Coward in early 1900's. His siblings also used Cowherd except for one brother who became Jack Cowheard. So there you go - like they say, you've got to have the Program to know the players.
Let me soak in your new posting and I'll be back with more questions.
