Hi Jack

My notes confirm that there is a James Coward you refer to, as born to James Coward and Miss Weaver, he was born in bet 1784-1786, I have the dob at 1785 in my notes, in Rutherford Co NC(as most of the Cowards of that time period were), he had a first wife, unknown name but was b bet 1776-1794 and d 1810-1812, his second wife Mary Worley b 1792 in SC and died between 1860-1870, they were married November 8,1812 in Rutherford Co, NC. (her parents names are Silas Worley and Keziah Maxey).

James died 1870 and is buried at Long Swamp Cemetary, Pickens Co. GA

In my notes, it's says he deeded one acre to Long Swamp Church in 1858, where he is buried and where there is a Coward/Cowart cemetary. An interesting place to visit if you want to get more information, you can visit either in person or online.

Your G G Grandfather William Oliver Coward (b.1815 NC m. Abigail Wilkie) looks to be possibly the first child born of this union between Mary and James. So yes, I'd say we might be linked.

At that time period most of the families did have 11-15 children, so it falls in line with your question about how many there were. That's how the Coward/Cowart line became so prolific. For about 4 generations everyone had 10-15 children.

Keep seaching the internet, because that's how I found alot of what I have and it does correspond.
If you want to email me, srobinson2844@yahoo.com we could correspond and I could point you in the right direction.
I don't have alot on your line because it shoots off almost immediately, but, I've given you what I have and have ammended my notes to include what you have.

One other note, in the spelling of your name, the original from England was Coward, my mother's name became Cowart, you are Cowherd. It's difficult to tell, if you from the same line. Sometimes the online trees are not accurate.
There were Cowherds that came from England, so unless my information connects to something other than the internet, I might question it.

I have census records to support what I have. There were a pair of aunts, in the 40's and 50's that did alot of this reseach by hand. I've been told catagorically that Cowherd is not part of our line, but, who knows. It changed once to Cowart, so anything is possible. Hard paper doesn't lie, the internet, well, anyone can post anything. Do some research at the library as well in the geneology section.
Hope I've helped, email me directly if you want.
Sue
