You do have a mystery on your hands. Several years ago I had tried to find the husband and parents of a Polly Dennis from the Pulaski County Ga; I had the help of a Boutwell research and she was very knowledgable. If you place a query at the Boutwell forum, it's possible that you might get more help than you will at this forum.

I also had found where Cate Boutwell was suppose to have been Mrs Cate Taylor before her marriage, but no had has every to my knowledge found a record of the marriage of Cate(Kate, Catherine) to Stephen Boutwell. If the info is only assumed because of the 1850 census listing, there may be a problem with that assumption:
hh #75 1850 Pulaski Co
Stephen Boutwell age 24
Cate Boutwell 37
John Taylor 11
Wm. Taylor 10
Eliz Taylor 8
Jacob Boutwell 3
William Boutwell 3
Stephen Boutwell 1
Cate Taylor may have been a "single mother" at the time of her marriage to Stephen.
Then in William Taylor"s hh is a Polly Boutwell.
Could this Polly be Stephen's sister, hired by the Taylors and Cate a Taylor by birth not marriage--the dau of William and Polly Taylor. It might be worthwile to find out the maiden name of William Taylor's wife, could she also be a Boutwell, or was there another dau of William Taylor that married a Boutwell and this Polly was granddau? With her being 16 and Stephen 24, unless the ages are way off, she wouldn't be dau of Stephen.

It's hard to decided just how old Stephen and Cate are, as their ages varify from census to census. If the 1850 age is correct then Cate was a lot older than Stephen. That fact may have had them "fib" about their ages in order to try to get themselves closer to the same age.

It could be that the Amy boutwell, age, 20 listed as cousin on the 1880 Dodge census is the Amy, dau of William and Cate Boutwell:
1880 dodge
498 508 Mullis, Millis 19
Mary 19, wife (Mary Taylor, dau of William B and Eliza Jones Taylor)
Boutwell, Amy 20, cousin
Robert Boutwell is at hh 496.
Chappel Boutwell at 501

Here's another family connection that I can't figure out: Burch and Boutwells
On the 1870 Mortality census for Laurens Cty are some Boutwells that I think probably are related to the ones from Pulaski:
1472 Benj. Burch,m 4 (40?); Feb; Consumption
1472 Ross Burch, 8 Jan: meningitis
1472 Burch Sarah A Feb: """"
1472 Boutwell, Elizabeth 30, Jan, Meningitis
1472 Boutwell, Joseph 15, Jan """""""""
1472 Boutwell, Creasy, 5, Jan"""""""""
1472 boutwell, Katie, 5/12; Jan """"""""""
HH 1472 as it appears in 1870:
1472 Burch, Mary A 23
Elizabeth 27
John ?5
Wm S, 3
1473 Burch, Sarah, 30
Clemins (Dennis?), Amanda 20
