You also might be interested in this tid-bit of Moreland history I found and have added to my Quinn family history. 1B11- Elizabeth Madeline (Eliza) West (...b- Dec 4, 1834; PutnamCo, GA; ...d- April 18, 1913 in Atlanta, Fulton, GA ). Married Asbury Fletcher Moreland May 17, 1855, Stewart Co, GA.(...b- May 22, 1829, PutnamCo., GA;...d- Aug 29, 1909, Atlanta, GA) The following statement was printed in the Atlanta GA Constitution for August 31, 1947: There was the great house of Major A. F. Moreland, who was the namesake of Moreland Avenue. Long before Joel Hurt developed Inman Park...the section was known as Moreland Park and there was a Moreland Park Railroad Station at what is now Moreland Avenue and the Georgia Railroad. Major Moreland built a kiln and manufactured the brick which went into his home. The nails were square cut, the product of the community blacksmith. For years this dwelling was one of the show places of this section, and even today retains its dignity, although it is cut up into apartments, with dime-store numerals on its massiave doors. The old home used to be the center of one of Georgia's great plantations. Soon it will be razed and on its site will rise a modern 100 unit apartment development. The Atlanta Public Library supplied this reference to Inman Park: There still stands the building in Little Five Points where Professor Charles Neel founded the Moreland Park Military Academy. This was a very prominent school for boys for about fifteen years. The school was closed when Professor Neel went to another school to teach.. (A. F. agreed to donate land for the Military Academy if it would accept girls as day students, so his girls could attend, which they did. ) ...mpsailal@cox.net & billmoreland@sbcglobal.net Notify Administrator about this message?
