David and Mary Thompson, Lumpkin Co., GA 1850

I am trying to trace David Thompson b. 1784/85 NC. Many family trees show my prime candidate, David b. to William and Mary Tabor Thompson in Dec. 1784 in either SC or Rutherford Co., NC, to have died in 1799. However his grandfather, David the Emigrant, d. 1799 or 1800 and I'm wondering if the two have become mixed over time and 1799 is the death date of the grandfather. Otherwise David of Rutherford County is a perfect fit. My David is found in the 1850 census in Lumpkin Co., GA with wife Mary. He's 65 and she's 55. I would welcome any information on this brick wall! SallyK
