Researching Anne Bigness

I am researching the family of my great-great-great grandmother, Anne Bigness (b: 1979; married to Henry Thornton (b: Abt. 1823, Georgia) in 1823; died October 1857). Anne's son, Augustus (b: February 11, 1824, Baldwin Co, Georgia) was married on August 01, 1844 to Sarah Jane Warren (b: November 1825, Cannon Co, Tennessee; died October 1857). Augustus died May 01, 1892. Anne's grand-daughter, Nancy Artemis Thornton (b: July 07, 1857, Thaxton Co., Mississippi) was reputed to be Native American, and there doesn't appear to be any N.A. ancestry on the Thornton side of the family. Nancy Artemis Thornton married Theodore Payne Patterson on August 10, 1876 in Pontotoc Co, Mississippi. One of their children, Theodore Chester "Dock" Patterson (b: January 10, 1882, Pontotoc Co, Mississipp) was my grand-father. On November 25, 1913 in DeLeon, Texas, "Dock" married Docia Ella Dixon (b: May 03, 1893, Comanche Co., TX). Among their children was Mildred Bernice Patterson (b: August 30, 1921, Erath Co.), my mother. On July 18, 1942, in Abilene, Texas, she married my father, Gene Young Jarnagin (b: July 19, 1919, Ft. Smith, Arkansas). That brings you to me, Carol Jean Jarnagin-Calkins (b: August 15, 1946, Muskogee, OK), now living in Costa Rica. Other genealogists in the family tell me that the idea of N.A. ancestry is myth, and yet, my mother and her still-living, 97-year-old cousin, Lloyd Dixon, have assured me that it is not.
