Wish to correspond with decendants of MARY CHRISTENE THERESA SCHMIDT/SMITH b. 1874, Savannah, GA., d/o WILLIAM HENRY SCHMIDT AND MARGARET CLARA STRAUB. "Tina" married EDWARD K. DALE 17 Dec 1890 in Savannah, GA.

Need help with names of parents of WILLIAM HENRY SCHMIDT, b. 1834-1835 Hannover, Germany. HENRY SCHMIDT was in Augusta, Georgia by December 1858 when he married MARGARET CLARA STRAUB b. 1841, daughter of PETER STRAUB AND MARGARET SELENA (maiden name unknown).

I have found Henry Schmidt in only two census, the 1870 and 1880. The 1870 U. S. census listed Henry born in "Hanover, Germany', naturalized American. The 1880 lists his birth place and parents as Germany.

HENRY SCHMIDT was a tailor by trade. He is listed in city directories of Augusta, Savannah and Macon, Georgia thru the years from mid 1850's to 1897 working for various tailors. While in Macon between 1867-1887 he had his own business.

At the beginning of the Civl War, Henry enlisted in Co. A, DeKalb Riflemen, 1st (Olmstead's) Regular Georgia Infantry 7 Aug 1861 in Bryan County, Georgia. This unit subsequently became Co. B, 1st Battalion Georgia Sharpshooters in August 1862. He was shot in the hip and while recovering was stationed at the Quartermaster Dept. in Augusta,Georgia.

After the War, Clara and Henry lived in Augusta until her father died in November 1866. They moved to Savannah, Georgia where they lived until after the birth of their daughter, Louise in 1876, at which time they moved to Macon, Georgia. The Smiths (The spelling"Schmidt" became "Smith" after the Civil War) remained in Macon from about 1876 until 1886, with the exception of their eldest son, Henry L. Smith, who moved to Savannah in 1881.

Henry Schmidt/Smith left his family in Savannah sometime during they year of 1889 and never returned. In her Confederate Widow's Pension application in 1925, Clara stated Henry had left for Abbeville, South Carolina in 1889; had corresponded with her for a few months and never heard from him after that. She was denied a pension because she could not prove she was his widow. She died in Abraham Widows Home on Broughton Street in Savannah, Georgia 15 December 1930.

Clara steadfastly refused to move from Savannah. Her daughter, my grandmother, Eloise Agnes married SHELBY W. DAVIS and lived in Thomasville, Georgia. Her daughter, Christene, married EDWARD K. DALE, and lived in Thomasville and Richmond, Virginia. Her son, Henry, of Savannah was killed in a train accident in 1896 and son, William, of Savannah, died of a heart attack in 1909.

I contend Clara never left Savannah because she was waiting for Henry to return and she wanted to be there so he could find her. (okay, along with the German I have some Irish in me, too!).

I am interestd in any family lore about our gggdfather, Henry Schmidt. Need any information that "Tina" might have shared with her children about her father that would give us a clue as to where he came from or anything about him.

Children of HENRY SCHMIDT AND CLARA STRAUB:

Henry Leon Smith, b. 1862
Robert Lee Smithb. 1864
William Leon Smith, b. 1870
Mary Christine Theresa Smith, b. 1874
Eloise Agnes Smith, b. 1876

Clara and her children were members of the Catholic Church in Savannah.

Thanks for any help.
