The following is from a posting I first put on the Vandiver forum after a posting of grave markers there.
Thank you for posting the markers of WJ & Ada Vandiver and John J Vandiver. William J. Vandiver was the brother of my grandfather, John Joseph Vandiver. I have a brief "autobiography" that my grandfatehr wrote in 1959 that mentions William ("Bill") quite a bit, and describes their movements from their birthplace in Union Co, Georgia, where they were born in the J. John Souther homestead to John F.E. Vandiver and Rhoda Lucinda Souther, into Arkansas, Wyoming, and eventually Washington State. I also have J Joseph's letters to his wife to be, Lula May Estee, from about 1910 to 1914, many describing the work he did surveying and building the early roads, dams, canals, aqueducts, etc., many of these in the Cascade Mountains of Washington not far from Mt Ranier. William (Bill) and John Joseph (Joe) were two of 13 children born to Rhoda and JFE Vandiver. I have rather detailed information on most of them, including children. I also have a great deal of the Vandiver and Souther ancestry. My father started on this work when he was a young man in the 1930s or so, when many of the Southers and Vandivers and their various relations were still alive and available. He made a massive chart (on the wall beside me) showing the many Vandvers and SOuthers and related families with children and descendants when possible, as well as ancestors. Its about 2 ft by 3 ft, with tiny architect's style handwriting; literally hundreds of names and dozens of families, going back from around 1960 to the 1600s. I can send copies to those interested. The family has a marked pattern of being long lived: even generations back, they tend to live into their 80s and 90s. I remember going to the birthday party for the last of the 13 children, Della, when she was about 105 or so. I have small pictures of various family members, including JFE Vandiver and Rhoda Souther V, each of their parents, and some of their grandparents. I shall try to list some of the additional surnames connected in this huge family tree in a future posting.
