I am interested in a line of the Duke family, that migrated from Georgia to Alabama and on to Missouri (southeast)Stoddard county. Maybe Butler county Missouri. I have pieced some of this together as follows:
J.J. Duke born on July 4th, 1854 in Alabama, I believe from Anniston, but some accounts say they were from around Tuscaloosa. Moved to Missouri from Alabama about 1875-78 with his wife Matilda M.Williford. "JJ" may stand for Jeneral or James, I don't know which or both. He was always referred to as "JJ". The 1890 Missouri census lists him as "JJ".
I have deduced that JJ & Matilda were married about 1873 in Alabama. They had ,at the time of moving (about 1875-78) 2 children:
Elizabeth J. Duke b. 1874 in Alabama.
James W. Duke b. 1875 in Alabama.
Albert G. Duke b. 1880 in Missouri.(born after move)
They went on to have 13 children with 7or 8 surviving. (Tough in those days) Some of them I know:
Charles Duke, Ollis Duke (my grandfather), Ollie Duke (Ollis' twin), Grover Duke,of Dublin California, and Cleveland Duke, California.All of these are now deceased.
Both "JJ and Matilda listed on the 1890 census that their parents were born in Georgia. I have heard from family sources that JJ's parents' names were James and Eliza. Born circa 1830 & possibly lived around Savannah. They probably moved to Anniston or Tuscaloosa Alabama when "JJ" was young.
Thats about all I know at this time. I hope this might help some of you more experienced genealogists to find who were the parents of "JJ" and Matilda, and what part of Alabama they may be from.
