Seeking information on the Swindel Community, a trading center mentioned numerous times in “Sweet Land of Liberty” a history of Liberty County Georgia, by Robert Long Groover. Apparently the Swindel Community’s population was 100 in the late 1800’s and very early 1900’s with a Post Office, General Store, Sawmill (owned by J.C. Swindle), Naval Stores, and Turpentine Distiller. Location given was on a branch of the Canooche River 12 miles northwest of Hinesville, and nearest railroad was Moody on the Glennville Register Road. I believe the location of the old Swindel Community is now on or near the 525,000 acre Fort Stewart Military Reservation that was established about 1940 when about 1500 families or 6,000 people from Liberty, Long, and Bryan Counties were required to relocate. I am very much interested in making contact with anyone aware of the Swindel Community history and what happened to the 100 or so that moved from the community between 1900 and 1940.
