Names of Creeks, Swamps & Rivers in Liberty Co.

While reading through some Liberty County land records of 1822, I saw a name whose meaning I don't understand. I think it might be a creek or swamp, but cannot find anything like this on any map. Here is a part of the record:
...to sell and deliver all our parts land lying in the county of Liberty and state aforesaid, lying near the Desert [?] containing four hundred acres, more or less....

Does anyone know if there is a creek or swamp or island with a name like "Desert"? I would like to find the area where my ancestors lived in Liberty County from about 1800 to about 1820. They were Normans, who came from Dorchester, SC, and settled around Midway, but I have found one record showing Richard Norman, the father in this family, near Newport.....which I don't see on a modern map, either.

Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

Janice Newton Thurmond, Marietta, GA
