Claxton is the County Seat of Evans County. Evans County was formed from parts of Bullock and Tattnall Counties in 1914. Any records dating prior to then will be in Tattnall County (Reidsville) or Bullock County (Statesboro). Many people migrated to Evans County from Liberty and Bullock Counties, especially after the Revolutionary War when they received land grants for service in the war. When Fort Stewart was formed around 1940, many people in Liberty County were displaced and had to move. Most of them moved to Evans, Tattnall and other surrounding counties.
