I checked SK publications for the 1840 census index and it does not list any Sanfords in 1840 in Laurens Co. GA. Could not find him on ancestry.com either.

I use heritagequestonline and familysearch.org for my census. Heritagequestonline does not have indexes for 1830-1850 and familysearch does not go back that far.

It is possible that Sanford was not counted in 1840, but without looking through the entire census, there is no way of knowing. I would look through the census, but without knowing the township he was in, it would be very tedious. There are 10 districts and towns.

Familysearch does seem to show that he was married 3 times.
It would not surprise me that the children and wife from 1830 became ill and died. His first marriage was apparently to Caroline Steptoe in 1826. He then married Sarah Berryhill in 1838. 3rd marriage was to Sarah Finney in 1840. Probably did not have any children by his 2nd wife, who likely died in childbirth. Let me know if you need the exact dates.

Sandra
