Sales such as these usually resulted from a court order after failure of the named party/parties to satisfy a debt to someone, to a business, or to the local government. It could be that property was levied on to satisfy fi fas for non-payment of taxes, or it could be due to the result of the party being taken to court for failure to pay a debt to a private party, be it a business or an individual.
