I visited the Jones County Courthouse today and this is what I found. I checked the Reversed General Land Index which shows properties by purchaser. No Briggs found. Same for the Direct Index which shows properties by seller. I checked Early Deed Records Books A-L which covers period of 1808-1822 and still found no record of any Briggs named.
I found in the book "History of Jones County" by Carolyn White Williams a record of Elkanah Briggs in the 1811 Tax Digest. Listed with 202 1/2 acres in Jones County adjoining "Perdue" and the water course "Walnut Creek".
In the Probate office I found two marriages: page 142 John Matthews m. Matilda Briggs 4/25/1820, and page 269 William W. Briggs m. Amy Brown 9/2/1824. Both of the marriages were in Marriage Book A 1811-1828.
I checked Will Books A, B, and C which covers 1809-1856 and found no Briggs named.
Hope this helps a little.
