I don't know whether he was Indian or not. His father was William Marshall (b.1760-70 d.1839). I remember reading something that lead me to believe that they were fairly wealthy, which suggests that they were probably not Cherokee. I believe they were likely Scotch-Irish, because daughter Mahaley (who married Hinson Quinney) was listed in a book referring to the Queensborough Township (which the Creeks, I think, invaded in the mid 1700's before a peace treaty was signed). The Marshall's probably came to America to settle the Georgia land(and you could check registers- one of the ships was the Brittania which docked at Tybee Island, GA. I know the Quinney's came from eastern NC to settle the land in the early 1800's. Hope this helps.
