Aquilla Sr and Jr - Mystery Solved

I have done genealogy for over 35 years and the Matthews family was by far the most difficult and continues to be a
huge challenge. I will share some of the answers to the problems I faced.

Aquilla Matthews tombstone shows him born in August 02, 1762 and shows a date of 1804. The answer:

William Parker married Bathsheba Matthews in 1809 and lived on land next to Aquilla Matthews Senior. When Aquilla died in 1825 Bathsheba buried him on her land. This was just a short time before William Parker gave the land for Mt. Moriah.

Seven years later when Aquilla's grandson died he was placed on that same plot. Apparently there wasn't an opportunity or need to get a seperate stone so his birthdate of 1804 was added to his grandfather's. If you look at the markers at Mt. Moriah you won't find any even close to 1804 because there were none. As a matter of fact Aquilla Sr's plot is the oldest because he was the first.

Believe me, I have searched for many hours in LDS records and other places and there are ONLY 2 male Aquilla Matthews.

Now for the next confusing problem. Aquilla Matthews was the son of Thomas Matthews of Culpeper/Jefferson Counties. There are several major facts to prove that.

If you look at the 1820 Census you will see that Aquilla Sr had 2 sons and they were in the 18-25 box. However Thomas had 1 son under 10 (Charles) and 2 sons 10-15. They would be Aquilla Jr. and Daniel.

Don't let the Jr. fool you. When there were more one of legal age in the counties the older was Sr. and the younger was Jr despite their relationship. That also applies to Thomas' other son Charles. Since Charles Sr. was the son of Aqluilla the son of Thomas was given the Junior designation.

Next we look at the executors of Aquilla's estate. Thomas, his father, and Charles, his brother were the executors.

Thus we see that Aquilla did not marry his brother's widowed sister - he married his uncle's widowed wife.

Here is another mystery solved. Where were William and Catheryn during the 1820 census? This one took awhile to figure out.

William had died before the 1830 census was completed. William had moved his family in to live with his Aunt Margaret Matthews who had married Alexander Morrison. Alexander had passed away in 1820 so William moved Catheryn and the family in two live with Margaret and her small son and daughter.

Now I am pulling my hair out trying to figure out where Aquilla, Catheryn, and Margaret were during the 1830 census. They weren't necessarily living togeather. Hope some of you have ideas. Email me with your thoughts, questions, or ideas.
