Marjorie, while my family did not own any slaves with the last name Pope, we were related to the white (actually native american!) family Pope by marriages. The Pope family I know of was in Va, NC and then moved south. I am just guessing, but I know that when my lines moved from VA to Jefferson Co.Ga most of the relatives had freed their slaves BEFORE the civil war. Try the southern counties of Va right on the NC border - Craven Co, Brunswick, that area. There are still black/nat.am. families with the name along the borders there. A lot of them married Cherokees in the area when they were freed. Also some did go to SC and stayed with the families - Those are thoughts...good luck!
