McWatty Grandchildren of John Fortune, Sr.
Posted by: James T. Newell (ID *****1549) Date: August 30, 2002 at 19:38:18

The will of Anne Fortune, wife of John, Sr., recorded 9/4/1783 states "...Anne Fortune of Thorntree Creek in the county of Craven...", SC; names "Grandson Thomas McWatty" and "Grand Daughter Nancy McWatty." There is insufficient evidence yet found to establish the parents of these grandchildren. Anne further appoints Walter Robinson, a son-in-law, as executor. The Robinsons, along with other allied Fortune families were resident in Jefferson Co., GA in the early 1800s. There is a Thomas McWatty on the 1820, 1830, 1840, and 1850 Jefferson censuses. The 1850 states his birthplace as Kershaw Dist., SC which would place him in proximity to the early Fortune lands in SC. Seeking to make contact with anyone with knowledge, or other information concerning these families, especially McWattys.
