I am throwing out this possibility and hope that someone can prove or negate any part of it.
On the 1850 Jasper Co. census were:
Hiram Brooks
Caroline Brooks (widow of Bartholomew Grief Roberts)
Hiram's children by Elizabeth Jackson, daughter of Thomas Jackson:
William b. 1832
Nancy b. 1834
Thomas b. 1836
Elizabeth b. 1839
Joseph b. 1840
My ancestor was William J. Brooks who married in Troup Co. in 1854. He was born somewhere in GA in 1832. He named his own children William, Nancy, Joseph Hiram and Thomas Jefferson as well as other names.
On William J. Brooks' CSA record he states that he was born in Jones Co., GA. On the 1834 Jones Co. tax records, Hiram was paying taxes on two parcels of land in Troup Co. In 1836, he sold those parcels while living in Jasper Co. Witnesses were Hiram's Uncle Jarmony Bullard and Uncle Paschal Brooks. (Hiram was a grandson of James Brooks and Elizabeth Traylor by their son William.)
My theory is that this William, son of Hiram was the same one who married in Troup in 1854 and later lived in Harris County. In 1870 a Joseph Hiram Brooks, also born in Ga in 1840, married a Martha Sandal Daniel in Harris County where William J. Brooks also lived. Two of William J. Brooks' daughters also married Daniels from Harris County. One of those daughters even named her son Hiram. Both Hiram and William enlisted in the Confederate cause from LaGrange in Troup Co., but at different times.
All I have is circumstantial evidence. I would certainly like to have verification of some documentation. I will be grateful for any input.
