Thanks. I think my John may be a descendant of the Brinsley line out of Wilkes County, NC. Not sure but every time I start looking I always end up with those folks. The Wellborn's and Sanders (John Sanders' in one census has initial W. so I am thinking he may be John Wellborn Sanders Barnes) are both in Morgan and Wilkes County. There is a group in Houston that has a Johnson Marshall Wellborn, but the will definitely seems to rule out my family as a member. I don't see any connection between him and my family, they weren't neighbors, no marriages between the Owens' or Long's so they aren't related by marriage, and as far as I can tell he's not famous, so there isn't a good reason for him to be named after this guy unless he's a relative. I will keep looking for a connection. I know eventually I need to do a YDNA to find a family group we connect to. At least that way, I can concentrate on a specific area. It is so expensive though!...
John Sander Barnes' wife was from Houston County. I find no land records or anything for him to be in Russell, so I am guessing that he knew his wife or her family, and that is how they end up marrying. All his slaves and land appear to be her inheritance, her father John James Owens had gotten a lot of land in the Cherokee land Lottery and owned I don't know how many acres. She was quite wealthy, and her paternal
side of the family were upper class plantation owners (her paternal Uncle was James Boykin, I forget what he was in Georgia, but he's someone you can read about). Does anyone know what kind of probate records are available during the Civil War? I am thinking that they may be skimpy because the war was going on.
